She was warned on her wedding day! Barbara Hunt had no idea what she was getting into. She married David Sconce – the subject of the HBO documentary The Mortification. At the wedding itself his family told her: “Run away!” But Barbara, blinded by love, ignored them. 😱
Barbara’s shocking story:
Love story in the mall:
Barbara was a salesgirl in a Los Angeles mall. She met David there. Instant love! He seemed good-looking and glamorous. David showed her a black card to impress her. It worked! She gave him her number.

“Watch out! Run away!”
The two quickly got married. But on the wedding day, David’s father, grandparents took her aside. They asked her: “Are you sure you’re making a choice? You can still withdraw!” Such a big red flag! But Barbara was in love. She ignored that warning.
Horrible family secret:
David’s family ran the “Lamb Funeral Home”. Barbara didn’t like the business of the dead. She only went there occasionally. But she knew that it brought them a lot of money. They had two children and started living a great life.
One day she saw a terrible sight: David was pulling gold out of the teeth of the dead in the basement of the house! 😱 She was scared, but she remained silent as a loyalist.
Standing by her husband even in prison:
In 1989, David’s terrible crimes were revealed. What did he do?
- Burning multiple bodies at once (breaking bones to fill the bodies!)
- Stealing gold from the teeth of the dead
- Sending gunmen to competing funeral businesses!
He was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Barbara still stood by him. After getting out of prison, the whole family moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, to “make a new start.” His parents lived next door to them.
Finally free and living a quiet life:
But David didn’t stop committing crimes again. He cheated on bus tickets. In 2013, he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for possession of guns (for violating a California lifetime license).
Barbara’s patience ran out. They finally broke up for good and got divorced.
Now? She lives quietly in Arizona. She has chosen to stay out of public life to keep herself and her children safe. She is finally free from that nightmare!
David’s real fears are shown in the HBO documentary. He has no shame! In The Mortification, he says: mixing the ashes of the dead “isn’t bad at all”. A dead body is “no longer a person”. Imagine marrying a man like that!
Barbara’s story shows how blind love can be. All the warnings are ignored. But fortunately, she has come out of that life and lives in peace. You won, Barbara! 👏
