What the creator said
The genius behind the show, Hwang Dong-hyuk, revealed all in an interview with Netflix. He said that Gi-hoon wasn’t originally going to die. But while writing, he thought, “No, this is how it should end.” He wanted Gi-hun’s death to send us a big message: If we’re all selfish and don’t help each other, we’re screwed. Hwang says, “Gi-hun had to show us the importance of sacrifice.” Deep, right?
